I’ve said it time and time again that digital eye strain is no joking matter and you should take regular breaks and give your eyes some much needed rest. That’s what Vovsoft’s Health Break application is all about. It will track your work as well as idle time and remind you when it’s time to take a break. By default, it will ask you to take a break after 20 minutes of continuous work.

To get started with Health Break, you will have to complete a standard installation procedure: download an installer, run it, and follow a setup wizard’s instructions. When you’re done and you launch Health Break for the first time, a prompt will show up and tell you that you need to provide your email address to start using this application.

Health Break’s interface displays two timers: Work Time and Idle Time. Work Time is a countdown timer that will bring up a "Break Time" prompt when it reaches zero. The Idle Time timer activates whenever you’re idle (when you’re not moving the mouse and not pressing any key). If the Idle Time timer reaches a set value, the Work Time timer will reset.

By default, Work Time is set at 20 minutes and Idle Time at 3 minutes. Work continuously for 20 minutes, and Health Break will tell you to take a break when those 20 minutes are up. But if you’re idle for 3 minutes, Work Time will reset and you won’t get a break reminder. As you can see from the Quick Look video that accompanies this article, you can easily set Work Time and Idle Time to any value you want.

Health Break is shareware, priced at $9.99 at the time of writing this. The trial version will bring up a registration reminder every time you launch the application. If you’re looking for a free tool that will remind you to take a break, here are several suggestions.

Spending hours on end in front of the PC isn’t good for your eyes and your health. Get Health Break and it will remind you to take a break.

Pros

Installing Health Break on a Windows PC takes little time and effort. You can set custom Work Time and Idle Time values from the Settings menu. Health Break will remind you to take a break after a certain amount of time passes.

Cons

Stick with the trial version and you'll have to put up with a nag screen. Purchase a license and you'll have to spend ten dollars, which is way too much money for what this application does. The "Break Time" prompt is accompanied by an audio notification and there's no way to turn it off. The Idle Time timer activates whenever you're not moving the mouse or using the keyboard, which doesn't always mean that you're not working.
